The hype surrounding Sharon’s “disengagement†from Gaza has raised expectations that peace is on the way. This disregards – even conceals – other disquieting elements: Israel continues to build and expand settlements so as to foreclose the possibility of a viable Palestinian state; the US has formally recognized Israel’s expansion into East Jerusalem and the West Bank; and the Road Map, the international community’s only diplomatic initiative, remains moribund.
This presentation by Jeff Halper, a leading figure in the Israeli peace movement, describes current realities “on the ground†and possible scenarios for achieving a just peace: the two-state solution, a one-state solution or a regional confederation.
